DIY Embroidered Halloween Initial Jacket with JOANN
Share
Welcome back to Stitchin With Samantha! I’m thrilled to partner with JOANN to bring you a spook-tacular DIY project just in time for Halloween. We’re going to create a festive Initial Jean Jacket that’s perfect for adding a personalized touch to your fall wardrobe or your child’s closet. This fun and easy project is great for crafters of all levels and makes a fantastic gift!
Let’s get started!
Supplies Needed:
- Pre-Printed Halloween Initial Pattern, OR
- Halloween Digital Alphabet and Sulky Self-Adhesive, Fabric-Like, Water Soluble Stabilizer from JOANN (You will need a printer for this option)
- Denim Jacket (you can use an old one or grab a new one from Amazon – The one I used can be found here)
- DMC Embroidery Floss (Blanc, Light Shell Gray) from JOANN
- Lion Brand Yarn in a Halloween color (orange) from JOANN
- Darners Needle from JOANN
- Scissors – My favorite pair from JOANN
- Water Source
Instructions:
Getting a Pattern:
- First you will need to get your Spooky Initial pattern. If you want the pre-printed pattern shipped to you, visit my stick and stitch listing here.
- If you want to print the pattern yourself, I also have a digital alphabet version that comes with all 26 letters and a page of bat designs. You can purchase that here!
Printing a Digital Pattern (Optional):
- If you purchased the digital alphabet, you will now print out the letter of your choosing onto Sulky Self-Adhesive Water-Soluble Stabilizer.
- Insert a sheet of the sulky paper into your home printer with the adhesive side facing down. Be sure to follow your printer’s instructions for loading specialty paper. For the best printing results on my specific printer, I have found that setting your printer to draft print setting gives the best stitching experience.
- Carefully cut around the printed design, leaving a small border of adhesive around the edges of the design.
Preparing the Jacket:
- Lay your denim jacket on a flat surface and decide where you want to place your initial and bat design. I placed the initial centered on the back of the jean jacket and I placed 2 small bats on the right collar of the jacket.
Attaching the Designs:
- Gently peel off the backing from the adhesive side of your printed designs and place them onto the jacket.
Embroidering the Initial:
- The outline of the initial will be stitched first in chain stitch with 6 strands of DMC White (BLANC). You can find a chain stitch tutorial here.
- The bats will be stitched in whipped back stitch with 6 strands of DMC Light Shell Gray (453). You can find a whipped back stitch tutorial here.
- For the greenery, you will stitch the stems first in back stitch with the Orange Lion Brand yarn. Then, you will stitch the leaves in Leaf Stitch. You can find a leaf stitch tutorial here.
- The ghost will be outlined in back stitch with 6 strands of DMC White (BLANC). You can find a back stitch tutorial here.
- The face of the ghost will be stitched in back stitch and straight stitch with 6 strands of DMC White (BLANC). The smile will be done with 3 small back stitches, and the eyes will be done in 2 small straight stitches. Make a few straight stitches on top of each other when stitching the eyes to give them a fuller look.
Embroidering the Bat Collar:
- The bats on the collar will be stitched in whipped back stitch with 6 strands of DMC White (BLANC). You can find a whipped back stitch tutorial here.
Washing the Project:
- Rinse the jacket under running water for 3-5 minutes. Carefully work your fingers over the embroidery to remove any stabilizer stuck underneath the embroidery stitches. Make sure every part of the embroidery is thoroughly rinsed to remove all traces of the stabilizer.
- You can either air dry the sweater or run it through your normal laundry cycle. My personal preference is laundry because clothing will be washed anyways.
